Veteran FDNY Firefighter Loses Life in Brooklyn Blaze

| by admin

Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend we lost one of our Bravest. Lt. Gordon “Matt” Ambelas, a 14-year veteran of the FDNY, gave his life while searching for survivors and victims of a Williamsburg, Brooklyn high-rise fire. He was the first New York firefighter to die in the line of duty in more than two years. Lt Ambelas, who also spent time working at Ground Zero after 9/11 and in Superstorm Sandy’s aftermath, was among several firefighters honored last month for helping to save the life of a 7-year-old neighborhood boy trapped in a roll-down gate. Our thoughts go out to his fellow firefighters, friends and family, including the wife and two young daughters he leaves behind. To make a donation in support of their education, please mail checks payable to ‘Ambelas Children’s Education Fund’ to The FDNY Foundation, 9 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Online donations are expected to be available shortly.
